How to Re Roof Your Home in the Winter with a Gorgeous Color Blend

Many homeowners think that roofing is only possible in the summer, but that’s not true. You can re roof your home in the winter and enjoy the benefits of a new and beautiful roof. In this article, we’ll show you how we did it for a client in Piscataway, New Jersey, using a stunning color blend that made their roof stand out.

The project was challenging, as we had to remove a solar power system and replace some of the roof deck that was damaged by water leaks. But we were able to complete it in November, which is not the ideal season for roofing.

Here are the steps we followed and the tips we learned along the way.

Remove the solar panels and the old shingles.

The first step was to carefully take off the solar panels and store them safely. We also had to disconnect and secure the electrical wiring that powered the system. Then, we had to strip off the old shingles and clean up the roof deck. We used a dumpster to dispose of the waste and a magnet to pick up any nails or metal pieces.

Repair the roof deck.

We discovered that some parts of the roof deck had been affected by water leaks and needed to be replaced with new plywood sheets. This added to the cost and time of the project, but it was necessary to ensure the stability and safety of the roof. We also applied extra sealant and flashing to prevent any future leaks or rotting.

Use rain and water barrier layering.

To protect the new roofing system from leaks or water damage, we used rain and water barrier layering. We applied an ice and water barrier on the eaves, valleys, and around any roof penetrations, such as vents, skylights, and chimneys. We also installed a synthetic underlayment on the rest of the roof deck, which provides a smooth and flat surface for the shingles. These layers act as a shield against rain, snow, ice, and wind, and help to maintain the integrity of the roof.

Install the new shingles.

We chose Owen Cornings product, Midnight Plum True Definition, Duration shingles, for the new roofing system. These shingles are amazing because they offer great durability, performance, and beauty. They have a unique color blend that creates a stunning effect on the roof. The Midnight Plum color is a deep and elegant shade of purple that adds a touch of class and flair to any home. They also have a patented SureNail Technology that offers excellent grip and wind resistance. Plus, they come with a limited lifetime warranty and a 130 mph wind resistance limited warranty.

Follow the best practices for roofing in the winter.

One of the challenges of roofing in the winter is the low temperature, which can affect the adhesion and flexibility of the shingles. To overcome this challenge, we followed the best practices for roofing in the winter, such as storing the shingles in a warm place before installation, using extra nails and hand-sealing the shingles, and avoiding walking on the roof until the shingles are fully settled. These practices help to ensure that the shingles are properly installed and secured, and that they do not crack or break.

Reinstall the solar power system.

The final step was to reinstall the solar power system on the new roof, making sure that it was aligned and connected correctly. We consulted experts from our solar partners of Maxeon Energy to ensure the system’s performance.

The result was a beautiful and functional roof that enhanced the curb appeal and value of the home.
